Field Trip to Fort Worth Museum!

Wow, what an awesome way to end Engineering Week!  Our trip to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History was fun, exciting, and packed full of totally engaging learning experiences.  It all began on the bus ride to the museum.  Students were noticing and commenting on the road construction and how it was engineering.  Then when we arrived, we went into the Omni Theater to watch The Ring of Fire.  You could feel the excitement as the students waited as patiently as possible for the movie to start.  After the movie, the real fun began!  The pictures below tell the rest of the story, enjoy!

Spelling Focus

The Spelling focus for 2/11-2/18 is long i-consonant-silent-e.  Examples of words that follow this pattern are:  like, smile, white, pipe and wide.  The two high frequency words are:  eight and ate.  

100th Day of School!

Wow, what a day!  First Grade celebrated the 100th day of school by: putting together 100 piece puzzles, using the number 100 to create an original design, counting out 100 pattern blocks then creating something new and finally exploring 100 in Spanish!

NEW MATH HOMEWORK

Beginning this Monday, Feb. 11, our math homework will have a different look and due date. We will be working with a particular number each week and show different ways to think about that number. This is an example of what it will look like. Scholars may need help with the spelling of the number word and may need some assistance with representing the number with money. For example, 12 = dime + 2 pennies, or it could be 2 nickels + 1 penny + 1 penny, or they can draw the coins with the first letter of the coin's name (D + P + P = 12). There are lots of ways of looking at it. If you have questions, please let me know.

The purpose of this is to help our scholars think flexibly about numbers and how they work. They will get the homework on Monday and will turn it in by Friday.
